Youth engagement is important to forge sustainable peace and development. To provide an opportunity to the young minds, a symposium on ‘Role of Youth in Peace Making’ was organised at Environmental Awareness Centre, Handwara on 17 October 2017. The students from Wellcare Institute, Handwara participated in the symposium. The entire event was conceptualised and organised by 21 Rashtriya Rifles/ 7 Sector Rashtriya Rifles with full cooperation of Dr Sheikh Muzafar, Principal of the Wellcare Institute.
The event was attended by approximately 150 young minds and prominent personalities including media representatives of Handwara, who alongside the speakers brought about thought provoking discussions to establish peace in the state. The symposium was a great success with eight out of twelve speakers being girls highlighting the role played by women in peace making. The interactive symposium reflected the confidence of the youth in peace process and their role in peace making in a very positive manner. To encourage Kashmiriyat and promote Kashmiri culture, Kashmiri folk dance and folk songs highlighting traditions of Kashmir were also performed by the students.
The event culminated by felicitation of all the participants and closing remarks by the Chief Guest Brigadier DR Rai, VSM, who in his address to the youth highlighted the need to establish inner and spiritual peace within self alongwith peace in the society. He emphasised on tolerance, co-existence and respect for humanity as the soul of any peace process to be successful.
