Srinagar: Continuing incidents of hair chopping have triggered protests and panic among the residents of Kashmir Valley as government seem clueless about the culprits and except announcing helplines and cash reward nothing has been done so far.
According to news agency GNS, the hair chopping incidents have also reached the capital Srinagar and today people in Nowgam area on the city outskirts staged a massive protest against failed bid to cut hair of a local girl by unidentified persons. Local residents took to streets and staged anti-government and anti-police protests. The residents accused government of complete failure in curbing incidents of braid chopping. The womenfolk of the area blocked Main Road and staged protests.
Reports from southern Anantnag district of Kashmir said that massive clashes and protests erupted in Lal Chowk and adjoining localities today against braid chopping incidents. The locals clashed with police while the police used teargas against the protesters. The situation in the area remained tense for several hours. The people in neighbouring Kulgam district also staged protests against the braid cutting.
The police have constituted special investigation teams to probe the braid cuttings and also announced helplines in all districts of the Valley. Furthermore, the IGP Kashmir has announced to reward any person who comes up with concrete information with regard to the culprits behind these incidents of hair chopping. The Srinagar police today announced helplines separately for people vis-à-vis hair chopping.
The hair chopping incidents have engulfed almost whole Valley and have triggered protests at scores of places. People and resistance leadership have pointed fingers towards the government forces men. However police have out rightly rejected involvement of forces men in these incidents. At several places, the mobs thrashed some suspects but they were later rescued by the police and army.
The braid cutting incident were reported first from Jammu Division but there were no large scale protests nor was any culprit nabbed. However, the incidents of braid chopping are increasingly turning into major crisis across the Valley and the rumor mongering is adding fuel to the fire. Meanwhile, a police official when contacted told GNS that they are investigating the matter and sought public cooperation. He asked people to remain calm and do not allow miscreants to exploit the situation.(GNS)
